Ohabei Shalom is the oldest Hebrew congregation in the Boston area and one of two congregations building temples along the North Brookline streetcar lines in the 1920s. The present Hebrew school to the right of the synagogue was erected first, in 1925, with the temple completed in 1927.

History. In 1844, Boston's first synagogue, the Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, asked permission from the Boston City Council to purchase the lot as a burying place. This cemetery was the first legally established Jewish cemetery in the state. Temple Ohabei Shalom was founded on February 26, 1843 by several Boston Jewish families, and is the first synagogue established in Massachusetts. After meeting in the homes of both a founding congregant and the first elected Rabbi, Abraham Saling, Ohabei Shalom dedicated its first building on Warren (now Warrenton) Street in Boston in 1852.
